Late night, I sat straight up in my bed, knocking my Barbie to the floor. A loud humming noise was coming from outside my bedroom window, but it didn't bother me that much, it sounded like Jake's snowmobile. Jake was my best friend's big brother, he often snuck out late at night to go riding his snowmobile in the woods, so the sound of that motor going after dark wasn't unusual. Yawning, I climbed out of bed and headed to the kitchen. The house was quiet, not even the sound of the TV came from my mom and dad's room, they must have had the door closed I figured. My slippers echoed as they struck the tile on the kitchen floor. I opened the fridge door and was looking inside, trying to decide if I wanted juice or milk more when I heard heavy footsteps from my parent's room.

Grabbing a cup of milk, I tiptoed up to their door, which was cracked open. There was an odd yellowish glow coming from inside, but I didn't think anything of it.

"Daddy must have gotten mom a new lamp when he was in Anchorage." Was my exact thought actually. Mom loved collecting unusual lamps and nightlights. She had one in particular, it looked like a merry go round horse, with the horse's body the part that glowed. I loved that one.

I peeked in the door, figuring if they were asleep, I could go to my own room without bothering them. Their room was flooded with the light, it glowed bright green from the window, and faded in color the closer to the door it got. Mom and Dad were standing in front of the window, staring into nothing. Their eyes were blank and unblinking. A man wearing a funny hat appeared beside them out of nowhere, and that was when I ran.

I hid in the very back of my closet, buried under a pile of clothes. I was crying, the sounds of my sobs muffled by my arm and an old teddy bear I had clutched desperately. I really don't remember how long I was there like that, I did fall asleep at some point during the night.

I woke to silence, my eyes still red and puffy from crying. I crawled out of the closet, trying not to make any sounds as I searched the house. My parents were nowhere to be found, and as I went from house to house, I found nobody else. I spent until dark searching, eventually going home and eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before collapsing into sleep on the couch.

The next few days went the same way, me wandering around the village until I was too tired, then going home and sleeping wherever I fell. One morning I woke up to the sound of a woman's voice and a car horn. I peered out the window and saw Miss M standing by her car, yelling for anyone who would answer. I didn't know her that well then, she had only moved to the island a few months before, but I was so grateful to see another person, I started crying, and ran to her. I told her everything I saw, and the rest, as the saying goes, is history.
