 A Day By the Lake
The tall slim figure watched the small
home from the shadows formed by the tall ancient trees. His lips quirked a very small,
faint smile. There was the sound of a screen door squeaking as it opened and closed. From
where he stood, he could easily watch the small woman as she settled herself into the
hammock hanging there. It swayed slightly as she drew a light blanket over herself to
guard from the slight chill of the early evening. He could not feel it, but remembered the
feeling. His alert ears picked up the slight sound of movement from inside the house.
'Ah yes,' he thought to himself, 'She does have a companion. I will wait to reward her
until he leaves.' He returned to his vigil, silent and stoic as before.
A few short hours later, the sun started slipping beneath the horizon, wreathing the trees
in warm oranges and reds. A figure as tall as the one watching came out and embraced the
woman, the two forms melding to one for a long moment. The taller one finally pulled away,
moving to their vehicle and leaving. The watcher nodded to himself, sliding silently
through the trees, pausing as he saw her looking directly at him.
"Odd, thought I saw something." He was close enough to hear her whispering to
herself, "Must just be a deer." She shrugged slightly and lit the candle on the
table beside her, the scent of berries wafted on the slight breeze. He moved closer,
peering through the rail of the porch. His eyes landed on her hand, noting the white
polish on her fingers before spotting the bag of chocolates her hand was reaching into.
His head tilted slightly as he heard her start singing softly to herself. His eyes taking
in the headphones on her ears as he soundlessly climbed onto the porch, standing behind
her head. Her dark blue lips moved to form the words to the song she heard in her ears,
harmonizing to music silent to anyone else.
Vanessa Williams - Save The
Best For Last
Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes round the moon
I see the passion in your eyes
Sometimes it's all a big surprise
Cause there was a time when all I did was wish
You'd tell me this was love
It's not the way I hoped or how I planned
But somehow it's enough
And now we're standing face-to-face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
All of the nights you came to me
When some silly girl had set you free
You wondered how you'd make it through
I wondered what was wrong with you
Cause how could you give your love to someone else
And share your dreams with me
Sometimes the very thing you're looking for
Is the one thing you can't see
But now we're standing face-to-face
Isn't this world a crazy place
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
Sometimes the very thing you're
looking for
Is the one thing you can't see
Sometimes the snow comes down in June
Sometimes the sun goes round the moon
Just when I thought our chance had passed
You go and save the best for last
You went and saved the best for
last... yeah.
Once he heard the song end, her voice trailing off,
he cleared his throat to get her attention. She, startled, started knocking the candy off
the table, the red foil wrapped pieces scattering, one landing right in front of his foot.
Y-You! she stammered out, too startled to notice the mess she had made. Her
eyes followed him as he bent over picking up the bright object that had landed before his
foot.
Yes, me He stepped closer to where she lay, her face purple from nervousness.
I am here to see you.
Her lips moved wordlessly, finally managing to move enough to remove her headphones. She
dropped them onto the table, the clatter echoing a little in the silence. Why do you
want to see me? She licked her lips, voice a whisper. She avoided looking into his
eyes, having enough trouble not falling over as it was. She had never had this honor
before, never seen him in person.
You gave your chance to meet me to another. His voice causing her heart to
pound in her chest. I am here to give you that chance. His fingers started
unwrapping the foil from the sweet in his hand.
Her eyes widened as she realized what he wanted, her face flushing more. He hovered over
her a little, slowly pressing the dark treat to her lip. She opened them eagerly, pulling
it into her mouth with a flick of her tongue. He knelt onto the wood floor, gathering more
of the chocolate into his large strong hands. She struggled to sit up more, eyes flicking
between his fingers and face. Again she tasted the bittersweetness on her lips, this time
followed by the light cool brush of his lips over hers. Her breath caught in her throat at
the touch, her vision swimming. She exhaled sharply as she felt the cold tip of his finger
brush her cheek.
His eyes assessed her slowly, watching her swallow the chocolate. She smiled at him,
finding the courage to look at his familiar face. Her eyes drank in his masculine beauty
as her fingers pushed the small chocolate into his mouth, fingers caressing his lips. He
quirked a small half-smile as he savored the candy.
His lips met hers once more, sharing the scent and taste with her before rising.
Thank you, her small voice floated to him, along with the sound of tires on
gravel. From the edge of the porch, she smiled into the darkness, her eyes following his
unusual energy, as she felt strong arms embrace her from behind. She turned and
passionately kissed her companion, so happy and proud to have such a special reminder of
such a unique man.
